This series exists because the most common question I get from other writers — both established and aspiring — is some version of: how does this actually work?
How do you build a career in health and medical writing? What does the market look like? What can you realistically earn? What skills and qualifications do you actually need? And how do you do good work in this ever-changing information environment?
I didn’t have good answers to those questions when I started. No one did. This series is the honest breakdown I wish someone had given me.
And I’m starting with the question most writers want to know but rarely get a straight answer to: the money.

Here’s what I know: the market for skilled health and medical writers has not disappeared. If anything, the volume of health content being produced has exploded. But the writers who are thriving right now (myself included) — who are commanding good fees, building sustainable careers, and not panicing about AI — are the ones who understand the full landscape, know what they’re worth, and can articulate the value they bring that a tool cannot.
This post is about what the market actually looks like, who’s commissioning work, what different client types pay, and how to think about your own rates in a way that’s grounded in real data rather than guesswork or anxiety.
What I earn as a freelance medical writer and how I work:
Here’s the raw data:
Annual income: £70,000+ (approximately $89,000 USD)
Hours worked per year: ~450–500 hours (based on recorded client hours in 2024 and 2025)
Average per week: under 10 hours — though in practice it’s peaks and troughs, rarely more than 15–20 hours, with quieter periods in between
Effective hourly rate: ~£140–£155 / $178–$197
Full-time equivalent: a standard working year is roughly 1,800 hours (accounting for annual leave) — at my effective rate, that would project to around £250,000–£280,000 / $318,000–$355,000.
I’m sharing this to illustrate what working efficiently and smartly, at professional rates, in the right parts of the market makes possible.
Before we go any further: I want to tell you what this really looks like in real life. I’m a mum of two. I do the school run. I take proper time off in school holidays and spend it with my kids. I go to a monthly fiction writing group (and sometimes even contribute my own work!). I write this newsletter. I look after myself, my family, and my business — all at the same time.
This is not a hustle story. It’s a sustainability story.

What I can tell you is that this is achievable when you understand the full market, build the right skills, and make intentional decisions.
